Case Study: Duck Pastoralism in Andhra Pradesh
| By Namratha Kolla and Kavya Chinda | September 2025
.
This case study highlights duck pastoralism as a critical livelihood in the dry parts of Andhra Pradesh particularly in the Rayalaseema region, where families migrate with their flocks across tanks, canals, and paddy fields. Ducks provide income through eggs and meat, while also offering ecological services such as pest control and soil enrichment. Despite its benefits, the practice faces challenges from shrinking/degraded wetlands, restricted access to fields, and lack of formal recognition as well as support systems. The authors recommend policy support, better market linkages, and community-based management of water bodies to sustain and strengthen this livelihood.
